Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about government-funded home care in Edmonton.

Yes. Health and personal care services delivered through Alberta Health Services' home and community care program are publicly funded by the Government of Alberta. Eligible Albertans receive personal care, nursing, and rehabilitation services at no direct cost to them or their families. To qualify for an assessment, you need a valid Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan number (your healthcare card). Call us at 825-401-8366 or Health Link at 811 to get started.

Any Alberta resident with a valid health care card who has an unmet need for care may qualify. This includes seniors needing daily assistance, children with special needs, individuals recovering from surgery or hospitalization, and people managing chronic physical or mental health conditions. Eligibility is determined through a professional assessment by an Alberta Health Services case manager — not by income or age alone.

The simplest way is to call Golden Age Homecare at 825-401-8366. Our assessment team will schedule a visit to your home, evaluate the patient's care needs, and file the application with Alberta Health Services on your behalf. You can also call Health Link at 811 directly to request an assessment. Anyone can make a referral — the patient, a family member, a friend, or a healthcare provider.

CDHCI is a program by the Government of Alberta that gives individuals receiving publicly funded home care the ability to choose their own care provider from a list of approved agencies. Instead of being assigned a provider by AHS, you pick who you want. The approved provider — like Golden Age Homecare — bills Alberta Blue Cross directly, so the patient and family pay nothing. This program offers more flexibility, consistent caregivers, and a more personalized care experience.

No. Government-funded home care through Alberta Health Services is funded separately by the provincial government and does not affect your Old Age Security (OAS), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), or any other federal or provincial benefits. There is no income clawback or payment required from the patient.

Absolutely. Under the CDHCI program, the choice of provider is yours. If you are currently receiving services from another home care company and would like to switch, simply contact us at 825-401-8366. We will coordinate with your AHS case manager and Alberta Blue Cross to transition your care seamlessly — with no interruption in service and no additional paperwork for you.
